Desktop & laptop

DDR4 RAM

DDR4 is the memory generation inside most desktops and laptops sold over the last several years, which makes it the most common RAM upgrade in India. If your PC already uses DDR4, adding or replacing a module is one of the cheapest ways to make multitasking, browsing and office work feel faster.

Because DDR4 has been on the market for a long time, it is available from many brands, in desktop (DIMM) and laptop (SO-DIMM) sizes, across a wide range of prices.

  • Common speeds: 2666MHz and 3200MHz
  • Popular sizes: 8GB and 16GB modules
  • Works only in DDR4 motherboards and laptops

DDR5 RAM

DDR5 is the newer memory generation used by current desktop and laptop platforms. It runs at much higher speeds than DDR4, which helps in gaming, video editing and other memory-heavy work on a new build.

DDR5 is physically and electrically different from DDR4, so it fits only DDR5 motherboards and laptops. It usually costs more per GB, so compare capacity and speed together before you pick a listing.

  • Common speeds: 4800MHz to 6000MHz
  • Popular sizes: 16GB and 32GB
  • Not interchangeable with DDR4

SO-DIMM

Laptop RAM

Laptop RAM uses the smaller SO-DIMM size, also found in mini PCs. Moving from 8GB to 16GB is one of the most noticeable upgrades for an older laptop, especially for students and office users who keep many tabs and apps open.

Before buying, check that your laptop has a free or replaceable slot: many thin laptops have memory soldered to the board, and each laptop accepts only the generation and speed its maker lists.

  • Sizes: SO-DIMM in DDR4 and DDR5
  • Popular upgrades: 8GB and 16GB
  • Check slots and the supported maximum first

DIMM & kits

Desktop RAM

Desktop RAM uses full-size DIMM modules and is sold both as single sticks and as matched kits of two. Kits are tested to run together in dual-channel mode, which is why builders often choose them for gaming and workstation PCs.

Desktop boards usually have two or four slots, so you can start with one module and add another later, as long as the generation and speed match.

  • Sold as single modules or 2-module kits
  • Range: 8GB sticks up to 64GB kits
  • Dual-channel needs a matched pair
